Functional Medicine

What is functional medicine and how can it work for you?

The functional medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.

By addressing root cause, rather than symptoms, practitioners become oriented to identifying the complexity of disease. They may find one condition has many different causes and, likewise, one cause may result in many different conditions. As a result, functional medicine treatment targets the specific manifestations of disease in each individual.

Identifying a patient's imbalances in physiology and function is the key

Being able to pinpoint antecedents, triggers, and mediators can give a complete picture as to a patient’s current health situation.  Problems occur when an imbalance of any of the body’s physiological processes are interrupted.

Key processes in the body which can affect health:

Detoxification

How well is your body at conjugating and removing toxins? A blocked pathway results in multiple complex disorders.

Hormone regulation

Whether it be thyroid, adrenals, pineal or the sex glands, a dysregulation in production can affect overall health.

Inflammatory response

Chronic inflammation can lead to an array of chronic health disorders, such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure

Energy production

How well are you producing energy? Mitochondrial damage can lead to dysfunction, causing a drop in energy levels

Digestive health

Do you suffer from leaky gut, fatty liver, or malabsorption of nutrients? Many diseases can be traced to gut dysbiosis.

Immune system function

The strength of your immune system depends on multiple lifestyle factors, such as diet, exercise and even psychological factors.
